Only small rocky ridges divide this giant glacial system called Ancohuma from the Illampu massif. This mountain is not important technically but it's gorgeous, there in the middle of such an extensive glacier which falls away to deep gullies. This summit can be reached from several different sides.
When climbing above 6.000 m. you can see the summit's classical shape, which resembles a bull's back.
ASCENT WEST FACE (DIRECT ROUTE) (7 DAYS)
1. day. SUSANA MINE.- Departure by car to Millipaya village. After a quick picnic lunch we drive up 800 meters across a winding narrow rocky abandoned road. Camp at 4.300 m. 5 hour journey.
2. day. GLACIER LAGOON.- 5 hour walk up moraines to 5.038 m. where we establish our base camp.
3. day. HIGH CAMP.- Ascent by glacier.
4. day. SUMMIT AND HIGH CAMP.-
5. day. TO BASE CAMP.-
6. day. DESCENT TO FIRST CAMP.-
7. day. RETURN TO LA PAZ.- By car
ASCENT EAST FACE (CLASSICAL ROUTE)
2. day. RINCONADA.- 4 hour trek to reach Korhuasini pass (4.480 m.) located near the north flanks of Pico del Norte. This trek passes by a small Kiswaras forest (typical andean tree). Then, a 2 hour walk leads us down to La Rinconada, a small, green, flat area near the moraines. 3. day. BASE CAMP.- 4.900 m. Today, we have to cross an important block of moraines along hilly field which rises up to a small plateau, the main entrance to the Ancohuma glacier. Camp nearby. 5 hour trek.
4. day. HIGH CAMP.- 5.700 m. 5 hour climb on glacier across snow and serac fields.
5. day. SUMMIT.- 6.430 m. 5 hour climb to reach the top. Descent to base camp.
6. day. DESCENT TO LA RINCONADA.-
7. day. RETURN TO ANCOMA.-
8. day. RETURN TO SORATA.- Hotel accomodations.
9. day. RETURN TO LA PAZ.-
