A large mountain massif located at the extreme northern end of the Royal Andean chain. Famous for its giant glaciers and ice walls lying among seracs and rimayes.
The summit of this massif is at 6.380 m., surrounded by other lower peaks such as:
Huayna Illampu, Pico del Norte, Schultz, Gorra de Hielo, Esperanza. Reaching one of these barely accesible summits would be the best reward you could ever receive.
ASCENT (8 DAYS)
1. day. SORATA.- Departure by car to Sorata (2.800 m.). A village located in a lush, deep, temperate valley near the base of Illampu's west flank. 3 hour journey, 147 kms. Hotel.
2. day. AGUAS CALIENTES.- We continue the trip, reaching Ancoma village (3.900 m.) after 5 hours. 3 hour walk to arrive at Aguas Calientes (4.400 m.). Camp.
3. day. BASE OF THE GLACIER.- 4 hour trek on moraines.
4. day. HIGH CAMP.- 5 hour climb to a huge glacial plateau at 5.500 m. Camp
5 day. SUMMIT.- 8 hour climb by a technical route for the first 300 mts. then follow a long ridge. Return to high camp.
6. day. AGUAS CALIENTES.- Return to base camp.
7. day. ANCOMA.- Return to the road. Camp.
8. day. RETURN TO LA PAZ.- By car.
