INFORMATION

Rurrenabaque is a smaller town in the north of Bolivia , on the Beni River .
It has in recent years become popular with international tourism as it is an easy gateway for visits to Madidi National Park (within the Bolivian rainforest ), as well as the surrounding pampas .
Rurrenabaque is reached by bus, 410 km from La Paz, or by airplane.

Rurrenabaque is on the east bank of the Beni River. It is expected that a bridge will be build over the river to connect with the town San Buenaventura on the west bank. The projection has begun in 2006.
The airfield in Rurrenabaque has a grass runway. It is expected that a better runway will be build in 2007. (According to BBC News: Ecotourism on the rise in Bolivia . By David Atkinson). Preparations have started in 2006).

Rurrenabaque is a starting point for ecotourism , and some eco-lodges are found in the area. The oldest and best known is Tucanes Ecolodge of Inca Land Tours on the Tuichi River reached by boat 40 minutes up stream from Rurrenabaque.

It is characterized for having a tropical humid climate and it is considered as one of the zones of the most richness in terms of bio - diversity. Rurrenabaque is called the "tour pearl of Beni" by its inhabitants.

The population is constituted mainly by the Chimanes, Mosetenes, Chamas and Tacaras ethnic groups.

It has exhuberant and paradisiac natural landscapes where exhotic wilderness and rivers mingle. The hostality of the inhabitants is outstanding.

It is interesting to visit Beni, Quiquibey, Tuhichi and Hondo rivers

The town of Rurrenabaque with its neighbor across the river of San Buena Aventura, is located in the Southwest corner of the province of Beni and has a population of more then 13000 people

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

The Rurrenabaque area has two different ecological systems. The jungle varying from 200 to 800 meters above sea level, while the flat land know as Moxos or Pampas is at 200 meters above sea level.

There are two seasons. November to March being the rainy season and the dry season es from April to October with an average temparature of 27 C. In the dry season south wind called "surazos" can coll the area down to 10 C.
