The Mururata, which holds an altitude of 5,869 meters above sea level, is part of the Cordillera Real and the view from its western side, is flat and elongated.

Mururata that in Aymara means “without head”, has its little legend, according to account, in remote times this mountain was the more haughty, one day, dared to defy the Andean gods when trying to grow and be the snowy mountain The highest of the world, but his arrogance was punished with a sling shot that beheaded him. Since then it is known as the Mururata.

Illimani is adjacent to and near the seat of government, which is 40 miles away, in fact, its location corresponds to the Pedro Domingo Murillo Province in this department. South side, however, is a challenge for mountaineers, it consists of a curtain of channels and columns of ice and rock that lie at the sight of the curious.

The Mururata is a flat topped mountain with 2 km . of width and 8 km . of long. The normal route does not show any difficulty.
