A tour of the Bolivian Altiplano

LA PAZ TO COROICO 16 DAYS

Day 1 : LA PAZ
Reception at the airport and transfer to the hotel. Free day.
Hotel.
Day 2 : LA PAZ - SURIKI
Departure from La Paz in the morning in private transport. We skirt the Real Mountain range before arriving to Huatajata (1h), a village located on the edge of the Lake Titicaca . Here we will be able to enjoy delicious trout, the gastronomic specialty of the lake shores. We will embark later on in one of the authentic and multicolored fishing boats that will carry us across the highest lake in the world. Our journey leads us to one of the islands located some hours from there: Suriki or Kalahuata, famous for their handcraft made of rushes (between 2h and 4h of sailing according to the whim of the wind...).
Camping under the stars and under the protection of the Inca Gods...
Day 3 : SURIKI - TIQUINA
In the morning, a short walk on the island. Then, we cross the lake before disembarking in Tiquina after 4 or 5 hours of sailing.
Cold lunch. Camping. All included.
Day 4 : TIQUINA - TREK - COPACABANA
We leave early in the morning to begin a trek that takes us from village to village through the fertile quinua and potato fields. Beautiful views of the Real Mountain range and the possibility of sharing the daily life of the lake inhabitants. About 6 hours walk will allow us to arrive to Copacabana, sacred village by the Lake (place of Inca pilgrimages continued later by the Spaniards and now by Aymaras and mestizos).

Day 5 : COPACABANA - TREK - YAMPUPATA - ISLA DEL SOL
The trek follows all along the crest of the peninsula of Yampupata. We cross the villages of Santa Ana and Zampaya, places where time seems to have stopped...
Arrival to Yampupata after 4/5 hours walk. A boat will take us to the Isla del Sol (Sun Island). We will disembark at the site of Pilkokaina, an old Inca palace. From here and after 15 minutes walk we will arrive to the village of Yumani.
Cold lunch. Night in María's and Ismael's house (limited comfort). All included.
Note: A private boat will be at our disposition for 2 days to transport the group and the backpacks during the walk.
Day 6 : YUMANI - CHINCANA - CHALLAPAMPA
From the ruins of Yumani, the south side of the Sun Island, we begin the trek that, following the crests, will take us the north side of the island where we can find the Inca ruins of Chincana (labyrinth, in Aymara). Approximately 5h walk.
Cold lunch. Night in the home of a villager (limited comfort). All included.
Day 7 : CHALLAPAMPA - COPACABANA
In the morning, return to Copacabana by motor boat (2/3h of sailing). Visit the most interesting places in village: La horca del Inca, the cathedral.
Ascent of the Stations of the Cross to contemplate a magnificent sunset.

Day 8 : COPACABANA - SORATA
In the morning, departure in private transport to the village of Sorata (2700 m.a.s.l.). After approximately a 3 hour drive and crossing an important mountain pass, we will arrive to the beautiful village of Sorata located in the foothills of Illampu (6430 m.a.s.l.). In the afternoon, we will take a walk to San Pedro's caves (4/5h round-trip).

Day 9 : SORATA - LAGUNA CHILATA (4200 m.a.s.l.)
Difficulty: altitude trek. 5 to 7 hours walk per day. Good physical condition is required.
In the morning, meet with our team of porters. From Sorata, we begin our trek ascending the hillsides of Illampu. After 5 or 6 hours walking along paths traversed by llamas, we arrive at Laguna Chilata. Cold lunch. Camping. All included.
Day 10 : LAGUNA CHILATA - LAGUNA GLACIAR (5038 m.a.s.l.) - LAGUNA CHILATA
We begin early in order to attempt the ascent to Laguna Glaciar (its name is taken from the glacier that literally falls on its rivera - 4/5h). Magnificent view of Lake Titicaca, the valley of Sorata and the Andes... The effort is worthwhile.
In the afternoon, descent to our camp based in the vicinities of Laguna Chilata.
Cold lunch. Camping. All included.
Day 11 : LAGUNA CHILATA - SORATA - LA PAZ
Descent to Sorata in the morning. Return to La Paz by local bus in the afternoon.
Day 12 : LA PAZ
La Paz city tour (4000 m.a.s.l.): Sagárnaga street and its local handicraft market (one of the most famous of South America), the witches street, San Pedro's food market, the historical center and the colonial neighborhood.

Day 13 : LA PAZ - LA CUMBRE - CHALLAMPAMPA
We leave La Paz at 8:00 a.m. in private transport to La Cumbre (4700 m.a.s.l. -1h). We begin at this height our singular trek that will lead us to the warm valleys of los Yungas. Meet with our team of porters. The trek starts by an ascent of about 1 hour to Apacheta Chucura. This is the point where the long descent to los Yungas begins... After 6 hour walk, we will arrive to the village of Challampampa.
Cold lunch. Camping. All included.
Day 14 : CHALLAMPAMPA - SANDILLANI
We continue our descent to the bottom of the valleys. The vegetation becomes denser and the air warmer. After 6 or 7 hour walk we will finally arrive at the village of Sandillani. The vegetation is now typically sub tropical.
Cold lunch. Camping. All included.
Day 15 : SANDILLANI - CHAIRO - COROICO
After some hour walk, we will finish our trek in the village of Chairo. A private jeep will be waiting for us in this point in order to lead us to Coroico, the pearl of los Yungas, an ideal place for a well-deserved rest.
Cold lunch. Hotel.
Day 16 : COROICO - LA PAZ
Free morning by a pool or a short walk around the village (from your window you may be able to see snowy peaks)
Return to La Paz in local transport during the afternoon.
Hotel.
