A tour of the Bolivian Altiplano 21 days

LA PAZ TO COROICO 21 DAYS

Day 1: LA PAZ
Reception at the airport and transfer to the hotel.
La Paz city tour (4000 m.a.s.l.): Sagárnaga street and its local handicraft market (one of the most famous of South America), the witches street, San Pedro's food market, the historical center and the colonial neighborhood.

Day 2: LA PAZ - COPACABANA
Departure from La Paz at in private transport. We skirt the Lake Titicaca and the Real Mountain before arriving to the village of Copacabana (3h). Visit the most interesting places in village: la horca del Inca, the cathedral.
Ascent of the Stations of the Cross to contemplate a magnificent sunset.

Day 3: COPACABANA - TREK ISLA DEL SOL - YUMANI
Early in the morning, a motor boat will take us to the north south side of the Isla del Sol (the Sun Island), the Inca ruins of Chincana (3h). From there, we begin the trek that, following the crests, will take to the side of the Sun where we will find the Inca vestiges of Pilkokaina and the so-called Source of the Inca (Approximately 5h walking).
Cold lunch. Night in María's and Ismael's house (limited comfort). All included.
Note: A private boat will be at our disposition for 2 days to transport the group and the backpacks during the walk.
Day 4: YUMANI - KALAKI - SORATA
In the morning, departure by motor boat to the Isla de la Luna (Moon Island) where we will visit the Templo de las ñustas (the Inca virgens). Later on, we will cross the lake until the village of Kalaki, on the shores of the Lake (4/5h according to the meteorological conditions). There, a vehicle will take us to Sorata, a beautiful village (2700 m.a.s.l.), at the foot of Illampu (6430 m.a.s.l.).

Day 5: SORATA - ANCOMA - COCOOYO
Difficulty: altitude trek that includes the crossing of several mountain passes at 5000 meters or more (at least one mountain pass per day). About 5 to 7 hours walk per day. Good physical condition is required.
In the morning, departure in private jeep to the village of Ancoma where we will meet our team of porters. We begin a significant ascent to the pass of Khorvasini (4400 m.a.s.l.). Later on, a descent skirting on of the sides of the Illampu (6400 m.a.s.l.), before arriving to Cocooyo (3500 m.a.s.l.), located in the bottom of a green valley. We will spend the night at the edge of a waterfall, about a hundred meters far from the village of Cocooyo.

Day 6: COCOOYO - CHAJOLPAYA
In the morning, we will cross the Sarani pass (4600 m.a.s.l.) before skirting the giant Ancohuma (6400 m.a.s.l.), the second mountain in this fabulous mountain chain. The descent leads us to the village of Chajolpaya (4300 m.a.s.l.) where we will arrive in the afternoon.

Day 7: CHAJOLPAYA - JACHAPAMPA
Departure at 8:00 to the Negruni pass, at nearly 5000 m.a.s.l. (covered with snow 9 out of 12 months of the year). We will set up our camp after a significant descent to 3900 meters.

Day 8: JACHAPAMPA - PALCA
A calm day walking trhough the foothills of the massive Chearoco. Lunch on the shores of the magnificent lagoon at Cotapata. Then, descend to the valley of Palca (4600 m.a.s.l.).

Day 9: PALCA - HANKOLAKAYA
The presence of the massive Chachacomani will accompany us throughout the day. This mountain is the shelter of the biggest condors of the Real Mountain range. Later on, we will cross the Huaraco pass (4900 m.a.s.l.) and we will continue a long descent to the valley located next to the village of Hankolakaya (4200 m.a.s.l.).

Day 10: HANKOLAKAYA - LAGUNA KHOTIA
In the morning, ascent to the Mollo pass (4800 m.a.s.l.) in an attempt to cross the mountain range. We will continue our trip on the south-west side of the mountain range.
The descent is spotted with small lagoons fed by the glaciers. In the afternoon, we will arrive at the splendid Khotia Lagoon (4300 m.a.s.l.).

Note: Replenishment of fresh food and possibility of evacuation for the walkers who choose not to carry on.
Day 11: LAGUNA KHOTIA - LAGUNA SISTAÑA
In the morning, a new ascent will take us to the Janchillani pass (4600 m.a.s.l.) before crossing a swamp area in the vicinities of the lagoons Chakhota and Ajwani. We cross our second pass (4850 m.a.s.l.) before arriving to Sistaña Lagoon where we will set up our camp.

Day 12: LAGUNA SISTAÑA - LAGUNA CHIARKHOTA
In the morning, we will cross a first pass at 4800 mts. to arrive at Jurikhota Lagoon. From there, we begin the ascent up a steep slope until coming to the Laguna Glaciar, (the glaciers literally fall into their icy waters), a jewel located at 4900 meters at the foot of Mount Condoriri (6300 m.a.s.l.).
We cross a second pass (5100 m.a.s.l.) before descending to the base camp at Condoriri, on the edge of the Laguna Chiarkhota (4700 m.a.s.l.).

Day 13: LAGUNA CHIARKHOTA - LAGUNA LIVIÑOSA
We will cross two successive passes of approximately 5000 m.a.s.l. before undertaking the long descent that will take us to Laguna Liviñosa. From here we will see the imposing Mount Huayna Potosí (6088 m.a.s.l.), the end point of our walk. The mountain dominates the valley where we will have a well-deserved rest.

Day 14: LAGUNA LIVIÑOSA - BOTIJLACA
We continue from heare our descent to the bottom of the valleys. The vegetation becomes denser and the air warmer. We finally arrive at the village of Botijlaca (3880 m.a.s.l.), a place of temperate climate (2h). There, a vehicle will be waiting for us in order to drive us to the Huayna Potosí shelter (1h).

Day 15 : BOTIJLACA - UMA PALKA
Meet with our team of porters.
The trek starts by a 3 or 4 hour ascent through the foothills of Tikimani (5519 m.a.s.l. We will cross a pass located at 4600 m.a.s.l. before taking a 3 hour descent that will lead us to the village of Uma Palka (3800 m.a.s.l.), the goal of the day.

Day 16 : UMA PALKA - ZANJA PAMPA
In the morning, we will begin our day by an ascent through the foothills of mountain Matilde (5000 m.a.s.l.). After a 2 hour walk we will arrive to Laguna Chiar Quta (4550 m alt.) before descending to the village of Zanja Pampa where we will set our camp.

Day 17 : ZANJA PAMPA - CHUKURA
A new 3 hour ascent will lead us to Laguna Quta Kuchu. From this point, we will begin a descent that will lead us to the hamlet of Chukura (about 2h) where we will join to the Choro Inca trail.

Day 18 : CHUKURA - CHALLAMPAMPA
After 4 hour walk we will arrive to the village of Challampampa. As we lose altitude, we will be able to discover new and different ecological levels, lush vegetation and splendid waterfalls.

Day 19 : CHALLAMPAMPA - SANDILLANI
We continue our descent to the bottom of the valleys. The vegetation becomes denser and the air warmer. After 6 or 7 hour walk we will finally arrive at the village of Sandillani. The vegetation is now typically sub tropical.
Cold lunch. Camping. All included.
Day 20 : SANDILLANI - CHAIRO - COROICO
After some hour walk, we will finish our trek in the village of Chairo. A private jeep will be waiting for us in this point in order to lead us to Coroico, the pearl of los Yungas, an ideal place for a well-deserved rest.
Cold lunch. Hotel.
Day 21 : COROICO - LA PAZ
Free morning by a pool or a short walk around the village (from your window you may be able to see snowy peaks).
Return to La Paz in local transport during the afternoon.
