The trek is mainly uphill and you must be reasonably fit to take part in this activity.

If weather conditions are unfavorable (weather in Bolivia is unpredictable and can change from bright and sunny to a full on storm in a matter of minutes, especially during the rainy season) and depending on your speed, you might not be able to make it to Pico Austria and stop at Paso Austria or even at the Laguna Chiarkhota – our guides are experienced enough to understand whether it will be possible to continue to the peak or not, but they can only decide on the day and not beforehand.

If they decide not to continue, it will be for your safety (either bad weather or bad timing with sunset approaching).

English – Speaking Guide Option
If you wish to hire an English-speaking guide there is an additional cost.

An English-speaking guide is not always available and in case we cannot confirm it, we will obviously refund you the extra cost you paid. The longer the notice you give us, the more likely it will be that we can confirm the English-speaking guide.

If you don’t want to go on the trek unless you have an English-speaking guide, you must let us know in the Further Details section, otherwise if it is not available, we will still confirm the tour with a Spanish-speaking guide. Price is per person.

The trek requires a minimum of 2 people in order to leave.

If you are just one person and want to book you can place your booking selecting 2 in the quantity box and we will try to find more people for your chosen date – if we cannot find more people we can cancel this booking and refund you, or we can still confirm the tour if you agree on paying double.

Pico Austria Condoriri – All One Day

Day 1

Day Trek - Pico Austria and Condoriri

At around 7.00 am you will be picked up from your accommodation. The 2-hour-drive passes through El Alto and onto the Altiplano where you start to see the Andean landscape and mountain ranges. We arrive at a place called La Rinconada (4400 mts) and we prepare for the trek.

Immediately you will be witnessing stunning mountain landscapes. The path turns northwards and heads through llama pastures towards the Condoriri range. The walking is easy and gradually climbs in altitude. You we will continue along the trail until arriving at Laguna Chiarkhota (4600m) where you will have a well earned rest and eat lunch surrounded by stunning snow capped peaks. It should take around 1 to 2 hours to arrive here.

After eating, we start going up to the Paso Austria (5000 mts) – takes around 2.5 hours. Next, we start on the trail up to Pico Austria which steadily climbs, winding at first until we reach a ridge that takes us up to the summit. The views from the top look out towards the Condoriri Range and also when clear, across to Huayna Potosi and Lake Titicaca. If you cannot get to the peak, we will just stop at Paso Austria and enjoy the view from there. It takes another 30 minutes from Paso Austria to get to the peak.

After some well earned rest, we will start descending and will pass by the lagoon Chiarkkhota, this time on the other side. You should arrive back to La Paz around 18.00 / 19.00 (depending on your trekking speed and traffic).
